Fundraising Event for ALS

Attention All OPFFA Locals:
As you know the OPFFA has been an ongoing supporter of ALS Ontario. This year ALS Ontario is introducing an exciting new fundraising activity to their calendar of events. ALS is a progressively paralyzing and fatal neuromuscular disease that affects many people. Fire fighters, along with other occupations, have been found to be more likely to contract ALS than the general population.

We recognize many Locals already contribute greatly to a variety of charities and to their communities but we request that you give this unique event consideration.
In July 2009, 41-year-old Police Constable Brian Dyck was chasing a suspect when his leg gave out. As a physically active man, he thought he’d pulled a muscle but it turned out to be much more serious. Diagnosed with ALS, a progressively paralyzing and fatal neuromuscular disease, Brian passed away just one year later.
“You think if I was going to die young it would be from a bullet from a bad guy or stepping on an IUD. As a policeman and a Canadian soldier, I was willing to give my life to protect innocent people, but I’m not willing to give it to a disease. I was diagnosed with ALS - a disease with no known cause or cure. Help ALS Ontario support others like me.”

Motorcycle Ride for Darrell
Date: Saturday June 11, 2011
Time: Registration 3p.m. at Thunder Road Harley Davidson, Windsor, ON or online @ (website address tbd)
Kickstands up: 4p.m.
Route: Ride will be a fully escorted nonstop ride on Scenic roads in Essex County arriving at the final location at 4780 11th Concession in Tecumseh, ON. This is the location for Jobin’s Field Bash aka Phil’s Hill. Sheltered parking for motorcycles on site.
Who’s invited: Anyone that is a licensed motorcycle rider can be part of the ride with passengers welcomed. If you don’t have a ride, you can still attend the activities at the end of the ride for a nominal fee.
Cost: $20 for rider and $15 for passenger which includes meal and entertainment and coin for rider.
Non-motorcycle guests $15 if purchased through ride committee includes meal and entertainment.
Activities: Ride cost includes dinner and a commemorative challenge coin, live music provided by 3 professional local bands and a local DJ. Tickets for beverages will be for sale on site.
Transportation: Shuttles will be provided to the nearby campground and some area hotels for those that do not wish to drive home. 24hr. security will be provided for motorcycles on site.
The Ride for Darrell is presented by: The International Association of Firefighters Motorcycle Group district 13, Windsor Professional Firefighters Benefit Fund, Blackburn Radio (The Rock), Thunder Road Harley Davidson, Jobin’s Field Bash (Phil’s Hill.
Reason:
This ride will be a fundraiser in support of Brother Darrell Ellwood of L0455 Windsor, who was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a severe form of cancer last year and was near death. Darrell received some excellent medical care in Windsor at two local hospitals during his 49 day stay and then in London for 20 days to undergo a stem cell transplant. While Darrell was in grave condition, the local hospital had him on an oscillating ventilator system that he credits with saving his life. The city has only one of these units and on Darrell's recommendation, this ride was organized to help raise funds for a possible second oscillating ventilator unit or other equipment requested for the local Intensive Care Units. During Darrell's many days in hospital, Darrell was aware of a situation where another patient was in need of this ventilator and the unit was in use by another patient and a transfer to London was necessary.

Richmond Hill Firefighters Perform Successful Trench Rescue

Richmond Hill crews responded into Markham to assist with a trench rescue call where a 15 year old was caught in a partial trench collapse today (Labour Day.) The rescue was a success and was featured on many local news stations. Please follow this link to view CFTO's coverage.

The Whitchurch-Stouffville Professional Firefighters Association is holding a charity 3 on 3 ball hockey tournament with proceeds going towards rebuilding the Fallen Firefighter Monument as well as Muscular Dystrophy. Attached is the information page as well as the registration form.

New Menu and Button

The menu down the left side of the website has been re-done and a new button has been added. It is to report an injury to the WSIB Committee. We are having issues with the committee finding out about workplace injuries in a timely fashion and are hoping this will help fix the problem. Also, please notify this committee of any injuries that happen outside the workplace as well, as they can help setup modified duties for non WSIB injuries in some cases.
If you are having problems getting the new menu to load, try going to secure news, log in and then it should appear. If your computer has "cookies" enabled, it may have stored the old page in memory, by going into secure, it should store the new menu.

Muscular Dystrophy Plaque Presented to Local 1957

During the October meeting, a presentation was made from Muscular Dystrophy to the Richmond Hill Professional Firefighters Association for our member's hard work in raising so much money through our numerous boot drives. Helping make the presentation was Alex who is a 14 year old boy who suffers from a form of MD. It was very inspiring to hear Alex thank our local for all their hard work and nice to be able to put a face to MD and why we do our boot drives. Attached is a photo from the presentation. The Executive would like to thank Rick Mills on behalf of all our member's for all the hard work he puts in to support MD.
On behalf of the Executive, thank you to those who took the time to attend the Fallen Firefighter Memorial. We would also like to acknowledge and thank Deputy Kraft for attending. Richmond Hill was well represented and I am sure everyone would agree it was a very worthwhile and meaninful ceremony.

Last year, Hillcrest held the biggest fundraiser in Hillcrest history!
$11,800 was raised in support of the Childhood Cancer Foundation. A great day was had by all. The community response had been overwhelmingly
positive, so we're doing it again!
The 2008 Cut Off Cancer event will be held on Saturday, September 20th from 12:00pm - 2:00pm...the goal is $15,000!

It is with deep regret and sorrow that we report the line-of-duty-death of Brother Robert (Bob) Leek of Local 3888 - Toronto. Brother Leek died on Sunday August 10, 2008 while working at the scene of the Sunrise Propane Industrial Gases incident after collapsing.
Visitation and funeral information will be forwarded as soon as it becomes available.
The staff, Executive Board, and entire membership of the OPFFA extends our sincerest condolences to the Leek Family and the members of Local 3888.

I am in the process of setting up an RHFD golf event at the new Tee Times Indoor Golf Centre (hwy 7&400) and would like to know if anyone would be interested. The manager at the centre has given us a really good price if we can fill all 6 of his sims at one time (times would be from 8am-10am, and would follow your 24 shift). We could either do a one day winner take all stroke event or make it last a few weeks and do a match play tournament.
